Google just announced some exciting updates ahead of the holidays, focusing on AI tools designed to help with everyday tasks. One of the standout reveals is Project Mariner, powered by their latest AI model, Gemini 2.0.
So, what’s Project Mariner? It’s a prototype that acts like a personal assistant for the web, helping you automate tasks you’d normally do yourself—like finding information, navigating websites, or filling out forms.
Here’s an example from Google’s demo: A user had a list of companies in a spreadsheet and wanted to find their contact information. Instead of manually looking up each one, they asked Mariner:
"Remember this list of companies, find their websites, and look up contact emails I can use to reach them."
Mariner broke the task into steps, explained its approach, and carried out everything in real time while the user watched. It doesn’t work in the background—you’re always in control—and it even asks for confirmation before doing things like making purchases.
For now, Mariner is still in testing and only available to a small group. If you’re curious to try it, you can join the waitlist here.
While it’s early days for Mariner, it’s an exciting look at how AI could make web tasks so much easier in the future. In the meantime, you can explore other cool AI tools on Google Labs!
